SAG Awards 2024- The top accolade was claimed by the film, with Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. receiving individual acting awards. Additionally, Lily Gladstone and Da’Vine Joy Randolph emerged victorious as well.
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” clinched three major victories at the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards during the Saturday night ceremony, further solidifying its impressive collection of industry accolades.
Taking home the prestigious SAG Award for best ensemble, the film’s cast, which includes Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt, graced the stage to accept the honor. Kenneth Branagh, their co-star, mentioned that the last time they were all together was in July, when they stood in unity during the biopic’s premiere in support of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
This marks a significant moment for us,” Branagh expressed.
So far, “Oppenheimer” has secured major awards at the Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Critics Choice Awards and is currently the favorite for the best picture Oscar. Last year’s best picture winner, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” also emerged victorious at the SAGs initially, although only five out of the last 10 ensemble winners have gone on to win an Oscar.
The SAG Awards have a more reliable history of predicting the individual acting categories, as the winners have aligned perfectly with the Oscars for the past two years. In the highly competitive best actor category, “Oppenheimer” lead Murphy emerged victorious over Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) and Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), among others, for his portrayal of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who spearheaded the Manhattan Project during World War II.
Despite Emma Stone winning the BAFTA for best actress in “Poor Things,” Lily Gladstone emerged victorious at SAG for her portrayal of an Osage woman in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The film depicts the tragic murder of her family members by her husband (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his uncle (Robert De Niro).
In the supporting categories, Da’Vine Joy Randolph was honored by SAG for her role as a grieving school cook in “The Holdovers,” while Downey delivered a powerful performance as a political operative in “Oppenheimer.” Both actors have been dominating the awards season and are highly likely to secure victory on Oscar night.
During his acceptance speech, Downey humorously questioned why he was experiencing success at this moment, jokingly stating that he would never tire of hearing his own voice unlike his fellow nominees.
Randolph, on the other hand, used her speech to inspire her fellow actors, emphasizing the fortunate position they are in to pursue their passion. She encouraged those still waiting for their breakthrough, assuring them that life can change in an instant.
At the ceremony, Barbra Streisand was presented with a lifetime achievement award. In her acceptance speech, she made a poignant reference to the current state of the world, expressing her dream of a future where prejudice becomes a thing of the past. Streisand highlighted the historical significance of Hollywood, which was built by studio chiefs who fled antisemitism in Eastern Europe, such as Samuel Goldwyn and Louis B. Mayer.
The actress, filmmaker, and singer primarily focused on her passion for film, reminiscing about her visits to a nearby theater during her time at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn. She expressed her preference for the make-believe world of movies over reality, stating, “I wanted to be in the movies” as it provided a more pleasant experience. Reflecting on her career as a working actress, she credited the director, William Wyler, and the cinematographer, Harry Stradling, for setting the tone with her first film, “Funny Girl” (1968). She appreciated their acceptance of young women with opinions, which shaped her trajectory in the industry.
