Shane Gillis SNL 2024- The comedian was dismissed from the program in 2019 even before making an appearance, a fact that he hardly acknowledged when he assumed the role of host on Saturday. During his monologue, he humorously urged the audience not to search for that particular information on Google.
Upon finally stepping onto the stage at NBC’s Studio 8H, Shane Gillis, the comedian who was previously fired from “Saturday Night Live” without even appearing in a single episode, chose not to dwell on his dismissal. Instead, Gillis, who has since gained popularity as a standup comedian and podcaster, delivered an opening monologue that hinted at the idea that both he and “S.N.L.” may have benefited from going their separate ways.
Gillis, known for his standup specials like “Beautiful Dogs” on Netflix and as a co-host of “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast,” was initially announced as an “S.N.L.” cast member in September 2019. However, just days later, he was dropped from the lineup after facing backlash for past podcast segments containing offensive language towards Chinese people, Judd Apatow, Chris Gethard, Andrew Yang, and Senator Bernie Sanders.
Following his dismissal, “S.N.L.” released a statement condemning Gillis’ language as offensive and hurtful. Gillis himself defended his comedy style in a social media post, stating that he is a comedian who pushes boundaries and that in comedy, there are bound to be some misses.
Upon his return to “S.N.L.” as a guest host after almost five years, Gillis took a different approach in his monologue compared to when Norm Macdonald hosted in 1999 after being fired from the show. Macdonald had adopted a scorched-earth approach, stating, “I haven’t gotten funnier. The show has gotten really bad.” In contrast, Gillis began his monologue by acknowledging that most people probably didn’t know who he was and humorously mentioned his previous firing from the show. He even requested the audience not to look it up or Google him, reassuring them that it was not a matter of concern.
Gillis humorously mentioned that he might not be the most suitable person to be on stage, confessing that his natural inclination was to become a “high school football coach.” He also playfully poked fun at his father, who was present in the audience, revealing that his dad served as a volunteer assistant coach for girls’ high school basketball.

Furthermore, he made a lighthearted remark about his mother and a period in his life when he shared a closer bond with her. Gillis amusingly stated, “I had a special connection with my mom. Whenever she picked me up from school, I would eagerly jump into the van and ask her, ‘Hey, tell me all about your day, girl!'”
Gillis then shared a personal story about his family members with Down syndrome. “It almost caught up with me,” he mentioned, shifting his weight from side to side. “I managed to avoid it, but it did graze me. It grazed me.”
Responding to the amused reaction of his audience, Gillis quipped, “Listen, I don’t have any TV-friendly material, okay? I’m doing my best here. Plus, this place is so brightly lit. I can see everyone not having a good time. This is the most anxious I’ve ever felt.”
While acknowledging that discussing Down syndrome can be uncomfortable for some, Gillis pointed out that the individuals he knows with the condition are “doing better than everyone I know — they’re consistently having a great time. They’re not concerned about the election. They’re just enjoying life.”
He remarked, “I thought that would get a bigger laugh. I thought we were allowed to have fun here.”
Gillis also made a joke about his sister, who he mentioned has adopted three Black children and has a daughter with Down syndrome. He envisioned a scenario in the future where his niece faces bullying from a white student.
“And then out of nowhere, three Black kids come to her rescue, start beating up that cracker,” he said. “It’s a heartwarming moment.”
