Michigan Primary 2024- Biden and Trump Forecasted as Victors in Most Recent Reports.
The state has emerged as a crucial battleground in the presidential election.
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump emerged victorious in their respective parties’ presidential primary in Michigan on Tuesday night, according to ABC News projections.
Following his projected win, Biden expressed gratitude to the people of Michigan for exercising their right to vote and participating in democracy. In a statement, he emphasized the importance of unity and thanked Michiganders for their support. He also reiterated his belief in the strength of the United States and the resilience of its citizens. Biden acknowledged that the fight for freedom, working families, and democracy requires collective effort, expressing confidence in the ability of Americans to come together and overcome challenges.
On the other hand, Trump celebrated his win over former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, surpassing expectations and highlighting Michigan’s significance as a crucial swing state in the general election. Addressing Michigan Republicans, he expressed his gratitude for their incredible support and expressed pride in the results, which exceeded anticipated outcomes. Trump emphasized the importance of winning Michigan, suggesting that it would lead to overall victory.
Despite her loss, Haley’s campaign emphasized that a significant portion of the Republican Party does not support Trump as the nominee. They pointed out that she earned over a quarter of the vote, indicating a warning sign for Trump’s prospects in November. The campaign also highlighted the losses suffered by Michigan Republicans since Trump assumed the presidency in 2016, including the state House, state Senate, and Governor’s mansion.
Polling stations in Michigan were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time.
The state’s presidential primary early voting took place from Feb.18 until Sunday. To participate in the vote-by-mail absentee ballots, they had to be received by a local elections clerk before 8 p.m. on Tuesday. On Aug. 3, there will be a separate state primary for U.S. representative and state legislative seats.
Although both Democratic and Republican presidential primaries are happening in Michigan, the delegates to the Republican National Convention will not be entirely bound by the results of Tuesday’s primary. The GOP primary results determine 16 delegates, while the remaining 39 of Michigan’s 55 Republican delegates will be awarded based on a resolution to be determined at a subsequent state party convention and the state party’s congressional district caucuses. All 117 of Michigan’s Democratic delegates will be awarded based on the primary election results on Tuesday.
Highlight the significance.
Michigan has emerged as a highly contested swing state in recent presidential elections, with a history of shifting between Democratic and Republican candidates. In the last three elections, the state has witnessed a close battle, as it voted for Republican Donald Trump in 2016 and then swung back to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020. Notably, Michigan garnered national attention during the 2020 election due to the proliferation of baseless election conspiracy theories.
Both President Biden and former President Trump have encountered challenges in the state in recent times. In a noteworthy development, Muslim and Arab American leaders in Michigan have initiated campaigns against voting for Biden in the upcoming 2024 election. Their protest stems from concerns over his policies regarding the Israel-Hamas war.
Furthermore, Trump’s potential candidacy for the 2024 election faced opposition in Michigan under the 14th Amendment, citing his actions surrounding the events of January 6. However, the state Supreme Court dismissed these challenges.
Biden releases statement commending UAW, stance on abortion.
President Biden expressed his gratitude towards the people of Michigan for their support in the primary, acknowledging their collaboration with Governor Whitmer and the remarkable Democratic leaders in the state’s congressional delegation. Through this partnership, significant progress has been achieved.
Additionally, Mr. Biden highlighted the productive relationship between his administration and the influential UAW union, which has endorsed him. Furthermore, he emphasized his administration’s stance on abortion. Despite not facing a strong opponent in Michigan, there was an attempt by Arab and Muslim Americans to vote “uncommitted” in the primary. If “uncommitted” manages to secure 15% of the vote, unpledged delegates may be sent to the convention.
Trump declares in a statement that if we secure Michigan, we secure the entire victory.
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign released a transcript of his comments following his victory in Michigan’s primary. In the transcript, Trump declared, “If we win Michigan, we win it all.”
Trump also asserted that the support of auto workers was on his side, while criticizing Democrats for the decline of the auto industry due to new policies. He vowed to reverse this trend and bring back production to Michigan. Earlier, Trump had criticized UAW president Shawn Fain for aligning with President Biden and Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
With 29% of the votes tallied, Trump is currently ahead of former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley by a significant margin of 66.9% to 28%.
