Lakers vs Nuggets: LeBron James achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first player in NBA history to score over 40,000 regular-season points. However, this achievement was overshadowed by the Los Angeles Lakers’ loss to the Denver Nuggets at Crypto.com Arena, with a final score of 124-114.
Initially, it seemed that James’ record-breaking moment would coincide with a victory as the Lakers (33-29) held the lead for the majority of the game. Unfortunately, the Nuggets (42-19) took control in the latter part of the matchup, finishing the fourth quarter with a dominant 16-4 run. This secured their sixth consecutive win and completed a 3-0 regular-season sweep of the Lakers.
It is worth noting that the Lakers have struggled against the Nuggets in recent times, having lost their last eight encounters, including a four-game sweep in last season’s Western Conference finals.
Anthony Davis expressed that the game always comes down to the last few minutes for their opponents. He mentioned that their opponents consistently execute the same plays and often put them in a difficult position. In those crucial moments, their opponents take advantage of their mistakes, making them pay for it.
In terms of individual performances, James had an impressive game, scoring 26 points on 12-for-20 shooting. He also contributed with nine assists and four rebounds. Rui Hachimura played a significant role as the primary defender against Nikola Jokic, scoring 23 points on 10-for-15 shooting. Jokic had a strong performance with 35 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. Austin Reaves had a standout game with 19 points and a career-high 14 assists. Davis contributed with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks, while D’Angelo Russell also scored 17 points.
James reached a milestone during the game, achieving it at the 10:39 mark of the second quarter. He made a layup over Michael Porter Jr., giving the Lakers an early 37-32 lead.
A little over a minute later, the Lakers decided to call a timeout. During this break, the organization showcased a montage of memorable moments from LeBron James’ career, which played in the arena. James then acknowledged the crowd.
James expressed his focus on winning, stating, “For me, the main thing is always the main thing, and that’s the win.” He also mentioned his disappointment that the victory had to come in a defeat. Despite playing well, the Lakers were unable to close out the game. James described the experience as bittersweet but cherished every moment on the court.
Maintaining their lead, the Lakers stayed ahead for the rest of the second quarter, heading into halftime with a score of 66-58. They continued to hold the lead for most of the third quarter until Nikola Jokic of the Nuggets went on a scoring spree. Within just 2½ minutes, Jokic scored 13 points, giving the Nuggets an 88-85 lead late in the quarter.
James acknowledged the challenge posed by the Nuggets, particularly highlighting Jokic’s versatility. He stated, “They have five threats on the floor at one time and their biggest threat can do everything, and that’s Joker. That’s what makes it very challenging.”
With 4:11 remaining in the game, the Lakers managed to regain the lead at 110-108 after James scored a layup assisted by Reaves.
However, from that point onwards, the Nuggets took control of the game.
Aaron Gordon, with only one 3-pointer in the game, managed to make a pull-up 3-pointer over Davis’ outstretched arm as the shot clock was winding down. This shot gave the Nuggets a 111-110 lead with less than four minutes remaining.
Following Gordon’s shot, Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Justin Holiday all made 2-pointers before the Lakers scored again. This resulted in a 9-0 run for the Nuggets, extending their lead to 117-110 with two minutes left.
Porter had an outstanding performance, scoring 25 points on a perfect 10-for-10 shooting. He also contributed 10 rebounds and four assists.
Despite Davis hitting a stepback jumper over Jokic with an assist from Reaves, the Lakers couldn’t narrow the deficit any further. The score stood at 117-112 with 1:49 left.
Coach Darvin Ham expressed the team’s desire to defeat the defending champions but emphasized the importance of winning any game. He acknowledged the need for improvement in certain areas and recognized the tough competition they faced. The team is focused on continuous improvement as they strive for as many wins as possible this season.
