F1 Lewis Hamilton News: Lewis Hamilton poised for surprising move to Ferrari Formula 1 team.
According to multiple sources, Lewis Hamilton is on the verge of finalizing a remarkable move from Mercedes to Ferrari by 2025.
The renowned driver, who holds the record for the most Formula 1 victories and has clinched the world championship title seven times, had reportedly inked a two-year contract extension with Mercedes in the previous year. However, recent developments suggest that the second year of the agreement might have been contingent upon certain conditions.
ESPN was unable to obtain comments from Mercedes and Ferrari regarding the matter. While there has been no official confirmation, sources have informed ESPN that the deal is practically finalized. According to these sources, Hamilton will be taking the place of Spanish driver Carlos Sainz.
Ferrari, a team that has participated in every F1 season and is often regarded as having significant influence, has not secured a drivers title since Kimi Raikkonen achieved it in 2007.
Hamilton, who shares the record of seven titles with Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher, now has an opportunity to break the Ferrari dry spell and establish himself as the most accomplished champion in Formula 1 history.
Should he achieve this feat, he would become the first driver since Juan Manuel Fangio in 1957 to secure championships with three different teams.
Throughout his career, the 39-year-old Hamilton has often been associated with Ferrari, the most successful team in the sport. However, it seemed likely that he would conclude his career with Mercedes.
In the previous season, Hamilton dismissed speculations of a move to the Italian team and jokingly brushed them aside before signing his contract extension with Mercedes. Nevertheless, recent months have witnessed a surge in negotiations, indicating a potential shift in the situation.
According to an insider at ESPN, Ferrari chairman John Elkann is resolute in his pursuit of securing a high-profile addition to the Ferrari team.
Elkann has long been an ardent admirer of Hamilton.
Throughout the years, Ferrari has consistently had at least one world champion driver on their roster, starting from Schumacher’s arrival in 1996 and ending with Sebastian Vettel’s departure in 2020. In 2021, Sainz joined forces with Charles Leclerc, who recently inked a lengthy contract extension that is speculated to keep him with Ferrari well beyond 2026.
During Hamilton’s junior career, Frederic Vasseur, the team boss of Ferrari, played a crucial role in guiding the British driver to a championship in GP2 (now Formula 2) with the ART team in 2006.
It is highly likely that Vasseur has also been instrumental in the ongoing negotiations. As for Sainz, Ferrari has been delaying a similar contract extension for him, indicating that he will play a significant role in shaping the driver market developments in the future.
Previously, Sainz was considered a potential candidate for Audi’s F1 project in 2026, but it now seems that he may find himself without a drive one year earlier than expected.
Sainz, a former Red Bull product, is now being considered as a potential candidate for a comeback to his previous team in 2025. With uncertainty surrounding Sergio Pérez’s future, Sainz could be a viable option for Red Bull. Additionally, he could also be a strong contender for Mercedes to fill the void left by Hamilton’s departure.
Hamilton’s exit from Mercedes, a team he joined in 2013, will undoubtedly create a significant vacuum. Throughout his tenure, Hamilton achieved remarkable success, securing six drivers championships with the team. This impressive feat added to his 2008 title with McLaren. Furthermore, he played a crucial role in Mercedes’ record-breaking streak of eight constructors championships from 2014 to 2021.
