49ers vs Packers: The Green Bay Packers suffered a devastating loss in the playoffs against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium. Despite leading by four points, the Packers missed a crucial scoring opportunity when rookie kicker Anders Carlson failed to convert a 41-yard field goal. This allowed the 49ers to drive 69 yards and score a touchdown, taking the lead with just over a minute remaining in the game.
In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide, Packers quarterback Jordan Love made a poor decision by throwing the ball back across the field, resulting in an interception by 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. This interception marked Greenlaw’s second of the second half.
With this defeat, the Packers’ season came to an end, while the San Francisco 49ers advanced to the NFC title game. Despite the loss, Love had a decent performance, completing 21 of 34 passes for 194 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, earning a passer rating of 72.4. Running back Aaron Jones also had a notable game, rushing for 108 yards on 18 carries, becoming the first player to achieve a 100-yard rushing game against the 49ers in 51 games, including playoffs.
WR Romeo Doubs recorded four receptions for a total of 83 yards, while WR Jayden Reed contributed with four catches for 35 yards.
Throughout the first half, the Green Bay Packers had three opportunities in the red-zone, but were only able to convert them into six points. As the game progressed, these missed opportunities became increasingly significant.
On the other side, the San Francisco 49ers’ QB Brock Purdy completed 23 of his 39 pass attempts, accumulating 252 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions. His performance resulted in an impressive 86.7 rating, despite the Packers having multiple chances to intercept the ball. Additionally, RB Christian McCaffrey carried the ball 17 times, gaining 98 yards and scoring two touchdowns, including the game-winning one.
Contributing to the 49ers’ offensive efforts, TE George Kittle made four receptions for a total of 81 yards and a touchdown, while WR Jauan Jennings caught five passes for 61 yards.
In summary, here is a recap of all the action that took place during the game:
The Packers are ahead of the 49ers with a score of 3-0 at the end of the first quarter
The Packers emerged victorious in the opening coin toss and made the decision to receive the ball. Following a 7-yard run by Aaron Jones, Jordan Love successfully completed a 7-yard pass to tight end Luke Musgrave, securing the first of three first downs in the opening series. Jones then carried the ball four consecutive times, accumulating 21 yards and advancing the ball to the San Francisco 40-yard line.
On a crucial third-and-6 play, Romeo Doubs drew a defensive pass interference penalty from Ambry Thomas, resulting in a 13-yard gain and moving the ball into the 49ers’ red zone. Despite Love’s unsuccessful attempt to connect with Doubs on a third-and-8 slant in the end zone, Green Bay opted for a 29-yard field goal by Anders Carlson. This successful kick granted the Packers a 3-0 lead with 7 minutes and 22 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The impressive 14-play, 58-yard drive lasted a total of 7 minutes and 38 seconds.
The 49ers began their offensive possession at their own 20-yard line after Josiah Deguara tackled Deebo Samuel. However, a false start penalty hindered their progress. Darnell Savage came close to intercepting Brock Purdy’s pass on first-and-15, but was unable to secure the ball. Samuel sustained an injury on the subsequent play after making a 9-yard catch. He underwent evaluation for a potential head injury but later returned to the game.
Kenny Clark and Preston Smith combined forces to sack Purdy, resulting in a loss of seven yards. The Packers then took over possession at their own 18-yard line following Mitch Wishnowsky’s impressive 57-yard punt and Jayden Reed’s 12-yard return.
San Francisco faced another setback as they were penalized for defensive pass interference, this time involving safety Tashaun Gipson against Christian Watson. This penalty granted Green Bay a 7-yard gain, advancing the ball to the San Francisco 25-yard line.
In a one-on-one coverage situation, Charvarius Ward stumbled, allowing Romeo Doubs to gain a wide-open 38-yard reception down the right sideline, reaching the San Francisco 33-yard line. On second-and-11, tight end Tucker Kraft created an opening on the sideline, enabling Emanuel Wilson to make an 11-yard catch.
As the first quarter came to a close, a 9-yard pitch to Jones set up a crucial third-and-1 situation for the Packers.
The 49ers are currently ahead of the Packers with a score of 7-6 at halftime
The Packers made an attempt to run with Jones and a sneak with Love, but the officials ruled that he did not reach the line to gain. This resulted in a turnover on downs at the San Francisco 14-yard line.
In two separate situations where the 49ers faced third-and-1, Purdy successfully found Jennings for a 16-yard gain. On first-and-10 at the Green Bay 37, Purdy threw the ball away from inside the hashes, but it was not considered intentional grounding as he was outside the pocket according to the officials.
Green Bay decided to blitz on third-and-5, but San Francisco managed to pick it up, giving Purdy enough time to connect with Kittle for a 32-yard touchdown. This put the 49ers ahead with a score of 7-3 and 8 minutes and 42 seconds remaining in the game.
Love responded by completing a 27-yard pass to Reed on the first play of the next series. The Packers gained 14 yards with consecutive runs by Jones and converted on third-and-7 with a 22-yard pass to Doubs. This set up a first-and-goal opportunity at the San Francisco 9-yard line.
Unfortunately, Love was unable to connect with Kraft in the back of the end zone on third down. As a result, the Packers settled for another field goal by Carlson, reducing their deficit to 7-6 with 4 minutes and 9 seconds left in the first half.
Purdy quickly completed a pass to Jennings for a 12-yard gain, securing the initial first down. A 2-yard run by McCaffrey brought the game to the two-minute warning. With 34 seconds remaining in the half, San Francisco used their first timeout on third-and-1 at the Green Bay 42-yard line.
The 49ers successfully converted with a 3-yard pass to Jennings but had to use their second timeout with 28 seconds left after Alexander stopped Jennings in bounds. In an attempt to score, the 49ers tried a 48-yard field goal, but it was blocked by Wooden, ending the first half.
This marked the first time the Packers had a blocked field goal in the postseason since Jan. 11, 2015, when Datone Jones blocked a field goal against the Cowboys.
The Packers are currently ahead of the 49ers with a score of 21-14 at the end of the third quarter
Samuel emerged from the 49ers’ locker room, sans his protective gear, and was declared unfit to continue after San Francisco’s initial drive in the second half.
The Packers commenced the second half by compelling a three-and-out. On first down, Kenny Clark halted Jennings, resulting in a 1-yard loss, while Rashan Gary contributed to the pressure that led to an incomplete pass by Purdy on third-and-4. Consequently, Green Bay gained possession at their own 25-yard line.
Advancing the ball, Green Bay reached the 44-yard line with a 9-yard run by Reed, and Jordan Love successfully converted a third-and-1 situation. However, due to an erroneous ball placement by the officials, LaFleur was compelled to utilize his first challenge in order to secure the first down.
During a third-and-15 play, Bo Melton forced a second defensive pass interference call on Thomas, resulting in a 41-yard penalty. Subsequently, Melton found himself wide open in the end zone on the following play, resulting in a 19-yard touchdown and putting the Packers back in the lead with a score of 13-7 and 9 minutes and 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
The 49ers swiftly responded with a 32-yard pass to George Kittle on a third-and-6 situation, followed by a 23-yard touchdown run by McCaffrey, propelling San Francisco back into the lead with a score of 14-13 and 7 minutes and 39 seconds left in the third quarter.
Keisean Nixon made a remarkable 73-yard kickoff return, but unfortunately, the ball came loose. However, Eric Wilson quickly reacted and recovered it, giving Green Bay an excellent starting position at the San Francisco 19-yard line. Nixon’s return goes down in history as the second longest in Packers postseason, only surpassed by Desmond Howard’s 99-yard touchdown return in Super Bowl XXXI.
In the following play, Green Bay regained the lead with a 13-yard pass to Doubs, followed by a 2-yard touchdown to Kraft. This put the Packers ahead 21-14 with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter, thanks to a successful two-point conversion pass to Jones.
The 49ers struggled to make progress on their next possession, going three-and-out. Keisean Nixon almost intercepted an inaccurate pass from Purdy on third-and-5, showcasing his defensive skills. Unfortunately, Quay Walker had to leave the field due to cramping issues after this series.
San Francisco managed to regain possession after Love’s pass was tipped and intercepted by Dre Greenlaw, who returned it to the 49ers’ 48-yard line with 2:02 left in the third quarter.
The 49ers successfully converted on third-and-9 with a 12-yard pass to Brandon Aiyuk, advancing to the GB 35-yard line. However, after two incomplete passes, Gary and Karl Brooks tackled Purdy for a minimal 1-yard gain.

After Whelan’s 42-yard punt, San Francisco took over at their own 25-yard line with 13:22 remaining. The 49ers managed to convert a crucial third-and-10 with a 21-yard pass to Jennings in the middle of the field. However, after Darnell Savage tackled McCaffrey for no gain on a first down pass and Purdy threw two consecutive incomplete passes, the 49ers had to send out their punt team.
Reed called for a fair catch on Wishnowsky’s punt at the Green Bay 10-yard line with 9:37 remaining. Prior to the next series, right tackle Zach Tom was ruled out due to a concussion evaluation earlier in the game.
On the first play of the series, Jones broke through the middle for a 53-yard run, advancing the ball to the San Francisco 37-yard line. The next play saw Arik Armstead being penalized for a neutral-zone infraction. Emanuel Wilson then impressively hurdled a defender, gaining eight yards and securing the first down.
Unfortunately, Love failed to connect with Dontayvion Wicks on third-and-9, and Carlson missed a 41-yard field goal wide left with 6:18 remaining.
Purdy managed to sneak for a 2-yard gain on third-and-1 from the San Francisco 40-yard line. He then completed an 11-yard slant pass to Aiyuk on third-and-5, crossing midfield. A 17-yard pass to Conley advanced the ball to the Green Bay 26-yard line. The game reached the two-minute warning after McCaffrey’s 3-yard run on second-and-2.
